Absentee Voting

Who can vote by absentee?

Any registered and qualified voter who is eligible to vote in an election may cast their vote by absentee ballot.

How to request an absentee ballot

An absentee ballot may be requested for a specific election or for all elections through the next two regularly scheduled general elections. The request can be made in person, by postal mail, by electronic mail or by telephone. Only the voter or designated member of his or her immediate family or legal guardian can request an absentee ballot for the voter. Immediate family means the voter's spouse or the parent, child, grandparent or sibling of the voter or the voter's spouse.

Request an Absentee Ballot Online

A request from the voter must include the following information:

  • Voter's name and address
  • Voter's date of birth
  • Address where the absentee ballot should be mailed
  • The elections that you need an absentee ballot for
  • Voter's signature (written requests only)

If the voter has designated an immediate family member or legal guardian to request an absentee ballot for him or herself, that designee must provide the above information in addition to the following:

  • The requester's name
  • The requester's address
  • The requester's driver's license number, if available
  • The requester's relationship to the voter
  • The requester's signature (written requests only)

Obtaining your absentee ballot

Absentee ballots are mailed approximately three (3) weeks prior to each election to those voters who have requested an absentee ballot. Be sure the Elections Office has your correct mailing address. Absentee ballots cannot be forwarded except for military and overseas voters.

A request for an absentee ballot must be received no later than 5:00 p.m. on the sixth day before an election, according to Florida law. Therefore, you must make your request for an absentee ballot no later than the Wednesday prior to the Election Day.

Beginning on the Thursday before Election Day, a qualified voter may designate in writing another person to pick up an absentee ballot for the voter. The designee may only pick up two (2) absentee ballots per election other than his or her own, except for ballots picked up for members of his or her immediate family. The designee must provide picture identification, the written authorization from the voter and complete an affidavit.

Voting the absentee ballot

The voter must personally vote the ballot unless assistance is required due to blindness, disability or inability to read or write. The voter must sign the return envelope. The absentee ballot will not be counted if the return envelope is not signed or if the signature does not match the signature we have in the voter registration file.

Returning your absentee ballot

You must mail, personally deliver or have someone else deliver your absentee ballot inside the completed mailing envelope to the Elections Office. Be sure there is sufficient postage if mailed.

Absentee ballots must be returned no later than 7:00 P.M. on the day of the election. Absentee ballots cannot be turned in at the polling place on election day unless the voter himself wishes to vote in person at the polls. If a voter has requested an absentee ballot and chooses to vote in person at the polls, the absentee ballot would then be voided and the voter would be issued a new ballot.

Track Your Absentee

I've requested an absentee ballot, has it been mailed yet? I already voted my absentee and mailed it in, has it been received by the Elections Office? Track the status of your absentee ballot using this free access system developed by the State of Florida.

Early Voting

Any registered and qualified voter who is eligible to vote in a county-wide election may vote in person at the early voting site. The voter must present a Florida driver's license, a Florida identification card or another form of picture and signature identification in order to vote. If you do not present the required identification or if your eligibility cannot be determined, you will only be permitted to vote a provisional ballot. Early voting begins on the 10th day before an election and ends on the Saturday before the election - Monday through Saturday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Voting Early in Municipal Elections

Early voting may not be available for municipal elections. Call the City Clerk's office prior to your city election to make sure early voting will be held for the municipal election.

Early Voting Sites

Contact the Elections Office for early voting times and locations in county-wide elections.
